Sailing Sept 26-29, 2019

Crew: Brian L, Andrew C, Betsy M, Austin M, Kristen M, Noah C, Lori R, Kali L Thursday: - Abbey Road Beatles album 50th anniversary today(!) - Close to departing marina late; stayed due to lack of dish soap Friday: - Breakfast Burritos @ marina slip - Sailed to S side of Otter Island, C-dog (docked at Otter) radioed us asking for Bronte.  (Thusly, the parrot became known as "Bronte".) - BL+BM kayaked to shore and met C-dog owner, and his actual dog Lucy. - Pork tenderloins and pasta salad dinner at anchorage - Clear night skies, meteor shower - AC+KL kayaked shoreline in the dark w/ headlamps ("creepy") Saturday: - Crew slept in, Breakfast burrito breakfast - Motored to S end of Rocky Island - AC+KM kayaked across to South Twin Island while the rest of the crew enjoyed shore & trails on Rocky.  Some hiked to old fishing village. - Motored to South Twin Island to pick up kayakers, then motored to Devils Island     - NC+AM+BL took kayaks & A

Sailing 2019 Aug 1-4

Crew: Brian L, Kate S, Peter VH, Matt H, Jason R, Austin W Thursday: - Dinner at Pedros in Cloquet, MN (notable barrel-sinks in restrooms) Friday: - Undocked, remembered we had to move the van up the hill, redocked. - Sailed directly to Sand Island (sailed most of the day) - En route, Brian & Matt kayaked from York Island to Sand Island.  Met a family camping near the beach. - Kate & Austin kayaked sea caves, Austin sank/capsized kayak on the way back to Abbey Road - Wind/waves uncooperative for dinner @ Sand.  Anchored @ S side of York (anchor on rock).  Hung out on the beach. - Dinner: Spanish rice, Italian sausages, Corn on the cob - Wind uncooperative for anchoring properly for the night, left York @ 9pm, motored to Stockton / Quarry Bay (~2hrs).  (Too close to generator-running neighbor, re-anchored before bed.) - Fwd toilet uncooperative, sealed it off Saturday: - Breakfast sandwiches at anchorage (props Peter); Matt, Austin, Jason morning swim. - Sailed/

Sailing Sept 27-30, 2018

Crew: Brian L, Peter VH, Matt & Christine H, Lori R, Jason R, Andrew C Thursday: - Bent Paddle brewery en route, Liz O sighting! Friday: - Many Penny Bistro breakfast, captain rested - Rainy morning - Sailed to Julian Bay, windy - BIRDS (Yellow rumped warblers) all over boat - Steak dinner (cold, windy), one other boat joined us; cold night, no flies! Saturday: - Hiked south end of Presque Isle - bear poop, tracks, loads of mushrooms, birds, dead birds/feathers [ theory ] - Sailed North of Cat Island, kayaked N-side of Ironwood over sunset - 1st destination Oak Island too crowded, sailed late instead to York Island - Anchored York >10pm, only boat there, cold night (rudder squealing on approach; bow thruster dead (temporarily?); anchor chain stuck, had to unstick piled up chain) - Meat + Cheese dinner Sunday: - Breakfast Sandwiches - Motored along shore to Raspberry Bay - Sailed safely home, with all sails but main sail. Crew: Brian L, Eric & Krista B, Andrew C, Noah C, Betsy M, Kate S, Austin M Thursday: - Stopped at Bent Paddle's new location in Duluth, ordered takeout from Oink-Moo-Cluck - Departed Pikes Bay Marina 10pm - Anchored Julian Bay (Stockton) Friday: - Shore party, swam, hiked, mystery sand, blueberries - Motored to Outer Island lighthouse/dock; Brian & Betsy kayaked to shore, met 2 sleeping kayakers - Sailed W, posta/sausages/tomatosauce en route / (Yacht Rock!) - Austin & Andrew kayaked Devils Island sea caves @ dusk/twilight - Anchored at Oak Island, stars Saturday: - Kayaked, hiked Oak Island / Breakfast Sandwiches - Motored W to Sand Island:  Silt came in from local runoff (for the rest of the trip) / Black flies (which had been bad up to this point) faded mostly away. - Kayaked Sand Island caves (in Kayak & Dinghy, crowded w/ kayakers) - Hiked & Motored to Sand Island lighthouse, toured - Motored to York Island for the evening; Fajitas dinn

Crew: Brian & Lisa L, Peter VH, Lori R, Noah C, Betsy M, Eric T Highlights: Thursday: - Weekend theme established early - "What Would Matt Do?" - Space Station sighting from dock, ~10:30pm Friday: - As Lori was recovering, crew trekked to Bayfield, ate at Greunke's - Got food provisions in the afternoon; shoved off ~5:30pm - Supper ~9pm - Hotdogs - Anchored N side of York Island (only boat), NE winds were to shift S overnight Saturday: - 5am - winds shifted SW (good), but some wave action from NW (bad) and rain - motored to Raspberry Bay (also the only boat, but another followed us in). - Breakfast ~12 noon - Eggs, Bacon, Sausages - *Hot* 15-30kt SW wind all day, some rain - With open hatches, nice breeze flowing through for cooking bacon, etc. - Took dinghy up into Rasberry Bay river/inlet (Noah, Betsy, Lori, Brian) - heard sand hill crane(s) inland, saw merganser, innumerable flies. - Noah jumped in bay a few times (46 degrees F, per panel readin

Crew: Brian L, Andrew C, Eric T, Betsy M, Kate S, Jason R, Anna D, Noah C Trip Highlights/Route: Thursday: - Arrived late, via Bent Paddle brewery in Duluth; Noah waited out a cold - Novice cocktail creation attempts Friday: - Noah joined us ~8:30am - Bought fly swatters, redundantly - Betsy ran to Bayfield on the highway, back with mint - Departed marina, sails up right away, shifty winds - Took turns kayaking shipwrecks in Red Cliff Bay, motored nearby (motoring ~30min) - Engine alarmed (IMT - "intake manifold temperature" >200°F) - Let engine cool under sail, debugged (in a few hours had cooled to 147°F; idling [neutral] helped cool faster) - Motored again SE of Oak Island (alarmed again, temp >200°F with ~1500 rpm for ~15min) - Shut off engine for duration (Primary concern: melting turbo charger, leading to fire, destroying engine and/or boat.) - Sailed to Anchorage N side of Oak Island, anchored under sail power, dark; 2 anchor attempts (motor nee
